Rejuvenated Mackenzie loving rally again
Haydn Mackenzie is relishing being back in an enjoyable environment after a successful move to the Rally Challenge 4WD class of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship.
Mackenzie entered his Toyota Yaris Proto at last month’s Dayle ITM Goldrush Rally Coromandel and won his class.
After a couple of years trying to develop the Toyota Yaris AP4 car, battling a range if issues, Mackenzie lost a bit of his love for the sport.
So after a good result in the AP4 at Canterbury, he parked it up and decided to bring out the Proto – with a fun-loving livery.
“It is definitely out there – it is what happens when you ask your son what colours you should have on your car,” Mackenzie laughed.
“He loves animals hence the leopard spots and zebra and the animated photo of him and Kieran’s [co-driver Kieran Anstis] son on the side of the car.
“It is a bit of a laugh and a talking point and being a new car, I wanted it to look very different to the AP4.”
Mackenzie said his rationale for swapping cars was literally about having more fun.
“I just want to come out and have some fun,” Mackenzie said. “I have had this car sitting there unbuilt for a while now, so we pushed through to get it done.
“Part of it is the rulings why I have gone cat five.
“It is like being back in the EVO again.”
