Who were the unsung performers at Otago Rally?

Who were some of the unsung performers at the Central Machine Hire Otago Rally? We ask the NZRC team to name their shining stars from the first round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship.

See who they picked and why.

Darren Galbraith – I’m picking Thomas Paul. I know cat 5 is only one day but he completed both days and won the Group A Challenge and thing in Rally Challenge 4WD.

Dylan Turner – Tim Mackersy moving to Open 2WD. He just looked awesome and was able to compete with cars that have a lot more grunt than his.

Blair Bartels – Paul Cross showed strong commitment and times on big, fast roads with a small engine – very impressive. Look out when we get to the North Island!

Dale Budge – Grant Blackberry was right on the heels of Caleb Macdonald in his first rally in three years. Imagine how good this battle is going to be once Grant shakes off the rust or gets to North Island roads he knows much better.

Geoff Ridder – Ari Pettigrew. He built a new car out of bits, first rally in it and he drives it like he stole it and won the class. I watched the post-Otago YouTube last night – bloody O for awesome!

Paul Mallard – Ben Harding was very close to Derek Ayson and did a good clean rally for someone with limited experience. It was cool to see him competing with his daughter too.
