Cunningham aims for strong result at Coromandel

Clint Cunningham heads to the penultimate round of both the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship driven by VINZ and the Rally Xtreme Challenge, the VINZ Goldrush Rally of Coromandel, looking for a strong result.
The 2014 season has been up and down to date for West Auckland’s Cunningham and co-driver Greg Ruka with some strong results punctuated by mechanical failures.
Since the Taranaki Tarmac Rally, the RCK Contractors Mitsubishi Evo 4 has spent time with both Ngatea Panelbeaters and Team Ralliart to recover from the rear end damage from the opening stage and the engine failure half way through the event and after a shakedown run late last week, is ready to take on the new challenge of the Coromandel road.
Cunningham is looking forward to the challenge of the Whitianga-based event, which is making a return to rallying after more than 35 years away from the region. This means that all drivers will start Friday’s reconnaissance on an even footing.
“Going to a new event always makes for a level playing field so that will be interesting. It should be a really exciting event and we would ideally like to be in the top ten for NZRC and top five for Xtreme,” says Cunningham. “I really have to thank Phil at Ngatea Panelbeaters too for turning the car around so quickly and after ironing out a few bugs at our test, we are good to go for the rally.”
The VINZ Goldrush Rally Coromandel runs on Saturday 23 August and will see crews take on some of the region’s famous gravel roads totalling 135km.
