Historic Championship – mid-season update

The Historic class of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship has been light on competition in 2024, but has seen the celebration of beautifully presented historic cars out of the garage and doing what they should be doing, shifting gravel.

Just two cars have registered for the championship to date, although word on the street is more may join in the North Island. Paul Fraser and Brody Cattermole have been setting the pace in their Ford Escort RS1800, complete in a replica livery of the 1979 Rally New Zealand winner in the hands of Hannu Mikkola, which was inspired by Paul competing in the same rally. They’ve been up against the ever popular Mike and Helen Cameron in their Mitsubishi Lancer of a similar vintage, although with just 1600cc, is very much a knife at the gun fight.

That has meant that competition hasn’t been fierce, Fraser one of only two drivers (alongside Dylan Thomson) sitting on a perfect score after three rounds, but both cars have been beautifully prepared and driven, with no major headaches or threats of retirement from either competitor across the season to date.

So, after three rounds, Paul Fraser and Brody Cattermole sit on 104 points, while Mike and Helen Cameron sit on 88.
