Summerfield looks to avenge Coromandel demons
Rangiora’s Matt Summerfield is looking to avenge the demons of 2014 when the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship returns to Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel for the penultimate round this weekend.
Last year, Summerfield was held back by niggling car problems for the majority of the day, but was able to avoid trouble and come home in seventh.
A new Castrol Edge Subaru for the 2015 season has reaped reward for Summerfield and co-driving sister Nicole, with the pair sitting fourth in NZRC standings but with the close nature of the championship the pair are within striking distance of second place at this weekend’s event.
With the Summerfield pairing writing their own pace notes on a one pass reconnaissance, the use of the exact same route as 2014 sees them able to build on the pace notes written last year, rather than starting from scratch.
“I’m really looking forward to Coromandel and hopefully having a better run that last year, it was a bit of a bogey event last year, but we’ve got plenty to fight for this year,” says Summerfield. “Using the same stages again this year is great for us, we can really focus on adding detail to our notes on recce.”
Mahindra Goldrush Rally Coromandel gets underway with a ceremonial start from 4.30pm in Whitianga on Friday afternoon. The following day, teams will tackle nine special stages totalling 130 kilometres before the finish ceremony from 4.15pm.
Matt Summerfield Rallisport would like to acknowledge their sponsors, without whom their 2015 campaign would not be possible: Castrol Edge, Autotech Services, Brita Safety, Clearwater Painting, North Canterbury Energy Centre, The Gearbox Company, Chatterton Builders, Liquorland, I C Frith Insurance Brokers and No Limit Construction.
