Warren returns to championship in Suzuki Swift
Rally Challenge 2WD defending champion Ian Warren makes a welcome return to the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship this week.
Warren will drive a Suzuki Swift Cup car, owned by Mackersy Motorsport, at this weekend’s Lone Star Rally Canterbury.
Having missed the opening round at Otago in April, Warren is fizzing.
“I’d like to thank Mackersy Motorsport for the offer and opportunity to the drive the Swift this weekend,” he said.
“My first rally car was an early MK1 Suzuki Swift GTI 1300. It taught me a lot about learning to go faster in a lower powered front wheel drive. Its all about corner speed and momentum.
“I believe this Suzuki Cup class will do the same for many drivers.
“I had a short drive down the road – but not on gravel yet. It’s a little down on power compared to most other 1600s but it will be interesting to see how it handles on the gravel.”
While he is not going to fight for the championship in 2026, Warren has a few other things to focus on this week.
“The goal is to have a smooth, clean rally. Possibly a few small set-up changes to help with the handling.
“I’m not too worried about results really – this is more to promote the Swift Cup and hopefully see the potential these Swifts can do.”
And what is the likelihood of seeing him at other events this year?
“Maybe we will see me at Southland in the Pulsar but will see how the weekend goes,” Warren explained. “I’d love to do a North Island rally again one day, but it won’t be this year.”
Lone Star Rally Canterbury begins on Saturday night with a ceremonial opening at Lone Star Manchester Street, in downtown Christchurch.
